The ever-popular, international, ace-of-spade comedian Carlos Mencia has graced us with his presence in the studio and has provided a terrific Guest Host session that you’ll hear all week! Mencia has been a well-recognized face in the comedy world for a number of years with countless television appearances and numerous stand-up tours and specials.

He has especially been the face of the Hispanic comedic community, along with George Lopez and Gabriel Iglesias, ever since he began his stand-up career.  Mencia was born in San Pedro Sula, Honduras to a Mexican mother and Honduran father. And get this; he was the seventeenth of eighteen children! Though, he has a Luke Skywalker type of story—not that his mother died during childbirth and his father is the ruler of an evil empire, just that he was sent away to Los Angeles (kind-of like Tatooine, right?) when he was three-months-old and raised by his aunt and uncle.

Mencia then moved back to Honduras because his family wanted him to avoid the gang scene in East Los Angeles, but he later moved back to L.A. and graduated high school. He left college early to pursue a full-time career in stand-up after a successful performance at The Laugh Factory.

After success in the L.A. comedy circuit, Mencia began acquiring bigger opportunities that provided him with more exposure. He gained the title “International Comedy Grand Champion” from Buscando Estrellas, which led to appearances on television shows In Living Color, Moesha, and The Arsenio Hall Show. Then, in 1994, he was chosen to host HBO’s Latino comedy showcase Loco Taco Slam.

Years went by of vigorously performing stand-up and patiently traveling across America in attempt to bring his subjects of race, culture, and social class to the ears and minds of people everywhere. He finally caught his break when he went on his first huge stand-up tour with comedians Freddy Soto and Pablo Francisco called, The Three Amigos in 2001. In the same year, he came out with his first stand-up album Take A Joke America.

Then, in 2002, he had his breakout performance on Comedy Central Presents, which propelled his career into the forward direction he had been longing for. His live performances—along with the subsequent releases of his next two albums America Rules (2002) and Unmerciful (2003)—became so widely popular that receiving his own half-hour show on Comedy Central was inevitable. So in 2005, Comedy Central announced that Mencia would have his own half-hour comedy show, Mind of Mencia.

The first season was met with enough success to bring it back for a second and third season. He also has created volumes of material over the years that have kept him busy on the road. These albums and DVDs include Not for the Easily Offended (2003) Down to the Nitty Gritty (2004) This is Carlos Mencia (2006) No Strings Attached (2006) The Best of Funny is Funny (2007) and Performance Enhanced (2008).

Mencia is on tour now and you can see if he is in a city near you here. He’s also toured around in several countries overseas for our Armed Forces.
