[WEEKLY VINYL] The Creep's Betty Lou's Got A New Tattoo

THE CREEP

BETTY LOU’s GOT A NEW TATTOO

Despite the songwriting credits of Hobson-Kithas, this is a ham-fisted remake of the 1958 Bobby Freeman tune “Betty Lou’s Got A New Pair Of Shoes.” At the time, the notion of a girl getting a tattoo was preposterous! And at the time, the only people with tattoos were old sailors and motorcycle gang members. This song, intended as a description of a really hip and dangerous chick, sounds reasonably tame today.  The 45rpm is from 1965 and is from a group that played around Ft. Worth, Texas.

Here are the lyrics:

Betty Lou, Betty Lou got a new tattoo

Walked in the tattoo shop

Gave a loud holler

Said, "I want tattoo for half a dollar"

Betty Lou, Betty Lou got a new tattoo

Sat down in the chair

Gave the man a dime

Said, "I want a tattoo up and down my spine"

Betty Lou, Betty Lou got a new tattoo

Drivin' down the street

Saw an XKE

Said to herself, "Well, that's the car for me"

Betty Lou, Betty Lou got a new tattoo

Where she gets her money

I'll never tell

If she don't stop-a
well she's gonna go to jail

Betty Lou got a new tattoo
